Biograd

Tourist destination info Biograd

Once the coronation city of Croatian kings, Biograd na Moru is today a modern tourist and nautical center, in the heart of the Adriatic, whose excellent transport links to the whole of Europe allow a quick and easy arrival to the destination.

Nature was in favor of Biograd, which boasts more than 300 sunny days a year.

Around Biograd, in a small area, a diverse landscape has been preserved - extremely indented coast, numerous islands and bays, wild mountains, clear rivers and the largest natural freshwater lake in Croatia. This allows a large selection of outdoor activities - sailing, diving, walking, biking, hiking, bird watching, canoeing, rafting. The town is surrounded by the national parks Kornati, Paklenica, Krka, Plitvice and Northern Velebit, nature parks Vrana Lake, Telaščica and Velebit.

In addition to exploring untouched nature, you can also embark on a journey into the past. Nearby are: Zadar, Vrana, Sibenik, Nin - places that boast reminders of our long and turbulent history.

Getting around in the town of Biograd is easy and you can get anywhere on foot. The old town is located on a peninsula, surrounded by coves that are today popular city beaches. There is a large selection of excellent restaurants, bars, entertainment venues, and the offer of accommodation is wide and varied.

The most popular places for swimming are the pebble beach Dražice and the sandy beach Soline on the south side of the city, both in a pine forest and the pebble beach Bošana on the north side. The beaches include playgrounds and entertainment programs for children, water attractions, beach volleyball courts, bars and restaurants.

Manifestations and events are constantly organized in Biograd. We highlight the Slovenian Weekend, Gastro Festival, Street Music Festival, Biograd Night, Knights of Vrana, Biograd Boat Show, Carnival Regatta and Regatta for Valentine's Day. It is interesting that the largest number of regattas in Croatia is held here annually, the list can be found at this link.

From the entertainment for children, we single out Fun Park Biograd (which with its 26 attractions is the largest amusement park in the Balkans) and eco-friendly Adventure Park in the pine forest.

If you are a fan of gastronomy and want to taste the delicacies and specialties of this area, visit some of the many restaurants and taverns such as restaurant "Stari grad", restaurant "Guste", restaurant "Meduza", tavern "Vapor", tavern "Cadena" and restaurant "Arkada".

Tourist tradition, rich tourist, cultural, sports and catering offer are just some of the reasons for choosing Biograd as a destination for an interesting, diverse and dynamic vacation.

History of Biograd:

Biograd was built on the ruins of ancient Blandona. It was first named in the 10th century. It became the capital of medieval Croatian rulers, kings and bishops in the 11th century. As an important center of that time, King Petar Krešimir founded a diocese there in 1050, built a male and female Benedictine monastery and the basilica of St. Ivana (who was the only survivor of the Venetian demolition of Biograd in 1125).

Visit the church of St. Roko (votive church from the 16th century, erected in the honor of St. Roko, patron saint of plague victims), St. Stosia church (built on the remains of the 18th century cathedral), Franciscan convent of St. Dujam (founded in the 14th century, contains valuable baroque saintly images, as well as a rich library), St. Ante church (dates back to the 13th century, built in an early romantic style), remains of the Benedictine convent of St. Ivan (1069), remains of the Benedictine convent of St. Toma (1102), the parish church of St. Antonija (1850), remains of an ancient aqueduct and countless other sites.

      Nice destination for a vacation
Most of the time we were in the Biograd in the city center it didn''t feel crowded with turists. Best bet was to don''t go to the main beach and use other smaller beaches around. Main beach was the only place where we felt overcrowded by turists.
